128 countries reject US Jerusalem move, Pakistan welcomes UNGA resolution

World’s big nations conveyed a strong message by principally stand with Palestine, says Maleeha Lodhi

The United Nations General Assembly has overwhelmingly rejected the Trump administration’s decision to recognize the disputed city of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital by a 128-9 vote.

The diplomats gathered in New York City ignored United States objections and approved a nonbinding resolution calling on countries to avoid moving their embassies to Jerusalem.

Despite the warning, 128 members voted in favor of the resolution supporting the longstanding international consensus that the status of Jerusalem which includes Egypt, Afghanistan, Iraq and India as well.

The nine states including the United States and Israel voted against the resolution. The other countries which supported Washington were Togo, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Marshall Islands, Guatemala and Honduras.

The vote came after a redoubling of threats by Nikki Haley, US ambassador to the UN, who said that Washington would remember which countries “disrespected” America by voting against it.

Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Maleeha Lodhi said that a resounding majority of UN member states has defied US threats, rejecting Trump’s controversial move of recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

She further said World’s big nations have conveyed a strong message to the United States that they principally stand with Palestine as UN General Assembly on Thursday adopted by a decisive vote of 128 to nine, with 35 abstentions, a motion rejecting the US decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel´s capital.

While addressing to UNGA session She said that Pakistan needs not to go after financial assistance. She said that the country cannot be intimidated by threats, adding that Pakistan will continue its support for justified demands of the Palestinian people.

Maleeha  Lodhi added that no Muslim country voted against the resolution, even major recipients of US aid such as Egypt, Afghanistan and Iraq also rejected US decision.
