Mardan University student killed over blasphemy allegations

Imran calls for firm action after lynching of student in Mardan

A 23-year-old Mass Communication department’s student have been brutally killed by enraged mob of students over blasphemy allegations at Abdul Wali Khan University’s premises.

According to Mardan Police, Mashal Khan, a journalism student of sixth semester at Mardan University who belonged to Zaida village in district Swabi was attacked a large number of enraged students, when he was at university hostel.

Mashal was beaten and shot by the mob and succumbed to the injuries he received. Mashal Khan was murdered over allegedly blasphemous remarks associated with his social media accounts. However, no such footage could be found on his Facebook page.

Police DSP Haider Khan and five others also been injured during the struggle to disperse the gathering in university’s feud.

FIR registered against 20 for murder

The FIR has been lodged in Sheikh Maltoon police station against 20 suspects, of whom eight have been arrested, Mardan District Police Officer Dr Mian Saeed said.

He said that around 45 students had been taken into custody in connection with the incident and taking the law into their hands.

DSP said that the mobsters wanted to burn the body after killing him, but the cops took the body into custody and shifted it to the hospital for autopsy.

Mashal remembered as a brilliant student and inquisitive person

Mashal Khan’s father while talking to media after the funeral prayer at Zaida Swabi said that, Mashal would talk about the teachings of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) with the family members at home. He added that Mashal always gave references of Holy Prophet as role model every time in the family discussion but being a journalist he used to criticize the system as the other journalist do.

One of Mashal’s teachers later told Reuters that he was a passionate and critical student. “He was brilliant and inquisitive, always complaining about the political system of the country, but I never heard him saying anything controversial against the religion,” the teacher said.

Mashal’s murder is challenge to government’s writ: father of the slain student

“It wasn’t just my son, other people were also injured. The government’s writ has been challenged,” he maintained, adding that if the government can safeguard its writ, it should also ask after his son.

Funeral prayers for Mashal were offered early Friday in Kalu Khan, Swabi District, where he was laid to rest.

Imran calls for firm action after lynching of student in Mardan

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan has condemned the lynching of a Mardan university student and called for action against those responsible for the murder.

Imran Khan, who is head of the ruling party in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has strongly condemned yesterday’s lynching at Mardan University and pledged “firm action” against the suspects.

The PTI chairman left a message from his official twitter account, said that “I am in touch with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Inspector General since last night on condemnable lynching of student in Mardan.”

He added, “Law of the jungle can’t prevail,” and “firm action is necessary.”
