Alice Merton made her international breakthrough as a pop singer with her song “No roots”.
Born in Frankfurt and then constantly moving: This is how the childhood and adolescence of pop star Alice Merton, who has meanwhile become a superstar, can be summarized. With 11 moves, she grew up in four different countries: Germany, Canada, France and the USA. After all, she spent a large part of her childhood in Oakville in the Canadian province of Ontario, but moved there several times with her parents. As a teenager, Alice Merton returned to Germany at the age of 13. In Munich she learned German for the first time before she finished school after moving to England again. She finally processes this constant moving in her first hit “No Roots”, which tells about her life on the move.
2015 can be seen as the start of her explosively successful career as a singer-songwriter. At that time she was involved in the album “The Book of Nature” by “Fahrenhaidt”, a Berlin music band whose founders worked as music producers for Yvonne Catterfeld and Cassandra Steen, among others. In 2016, Alice Merton founded her own label, Paper Plane Records International, which also released the world hit No Roots. Then it all happened in quick succession: in 2016 she won the acoustic pop category of the Federal Promotion Prize “Jugend kulturell”. A year later, prizes for pop culture followed in the categories “Most Hopeful Newcomer” and “Favorite Solo Artist” and the music prize of the Association of German Concert Directors, and in 2018, along with other prizes, ECHO Pop in the category “Pop Artist National”. The second hit the “Ground Running” also immediately entered the top charts. Alice Merton first appeared as the opening act for Bosse and Philipp Poisel. Somewhat more unusual detours in showbiz were her appearances at the “Life Ball” in Vienna and at the “Lollapalooza” in Berlin.
Her first hit “No Roots” was at the top of the charts worldwide: number 1 in the US alternative radio charts as well as in France, number 2 in Germany and a triple gold status, number 3 in Austria. Also in France, Italy or Poland cleared them with gold and platinum. And Vodafone used the song for a TV commercial. That’s not all: she played “No roots” live on the US broadcaster NBC in one of the most successful US late-night shows with Jimmy Fallon. The Tonight Show is US television’s longest running entertainment program. Alice Merton has appeared on other US talk shows such as the CBS show “The Late Late Show” with James Kimberley Corden and “Jimmy Kimmel Live! “at ABC. Alice Merton thus joins an illustrious group of guests such as Barack Obama or Madonna. Finally, in the summer of 2019, the television success came in Germany. As a likeable jury member of “The Voice of Germany”, Alice Merton won the 9th season right away with her talent Claudia Emmanuela Santoso. And Alice Merton’s debut album “Mint” was released in early 2019 and made it to number two in the German album charts.
“Of course, the Canadians also say that a Canadian made it, in Munich I’m the Munich native, in Frankfurt, the Frankfurt native’, now the ‘Berliner by choice’ – I can feel a bit at home everywhere.”
“I enjoy trying new things. And as a relative newcomer, I know how difficult it is to get started in music these days – especially as a woman, as I found out myself.”
“The education system in Germany is difficult for people who need to be integrated.”
“I just feel like I don’t have a country that my home is where my roots are. No country in the world is my home.”
