Short introduction
Arnold ‘Arnie’ Schwarzenegger is known to most people today as the muscular ‘Terminator’ from the action film series of the same name. However, there is more to the famous name than an actor – Arnold Schwarzenegger was a competitive athlete, once a bodybuilder and governor of the US state of California and is still an entrepreneur and publicist. Due to his success in many areas of life, he is now considered a prime example of the ‘American Dream’.
early life
Arnold Schwarzenegger was born on July 30, 1947 in Styria, Austria, and here in the small town of Thal near Graz. His father was a gendarme with the Austrian Federal Gendarmerie and his mother was a housewife. Together with his older brother – who died in a car accident in 1971 at the young age of 25 – he grew up here in what was typical of the post-war strict family home. Arnold Schwarzenegger played a lot of sports as a child and adolescent – including football, boxing, weightlifting and swimming, and became world champion in bodybuilding in 1967. In 1968 he emigrated to the USA and from then on won numerous championships in bodybuilding. At the same time, Arnold Schwarzenegger was studying business administration at two community colleges – but not regularly because of his visa. Finally, in 1975 – after he had won all the titles that he could win, mostly several times – he announced his retirement from competitive sports and from then on devoted himself to his film career, which had previously included a few smaller roles – which he mostly had to thank for his physical appearance – started.
Career
Arnold Schwarzenegger began his film career – which he had dreamed of since his youth because of his fondness for heroic films – under the pseudonym ‘Arnold Strong’. As early as 1969 he played the main role in ‘Hercules in New York’, which he – like other smaller roles at that time – mainly owed to his muscular appearance. He then starred in the films ‘Mr. Universum’ (1976) and ‘Pumping Iron’ (1977) before his international breakthrough starring in ‘Conan the Barbarian’ (1982) and ‘Conan the Destroyer’ (1984). As ‘Terminator’ in the film of the same name, released in 1984, Arnold Schwarzenegger also made his breakthrough in Hollywood, so that by the end of the 1980s he was one of the highest-earning actors in Hollywood. Other leading roles in action films followed, as well as comedies, which he mostly had to thank for his physical appearance. He not only played the ‘Terminator’ more times, but also the leading role in the 60 million dollar film production ‘Total Recall’, which was released in 1990. In the 1990s in particular, Arnold Scharzenegger made a large number of other films, some of which were only moderately successful. These include ‘True Lies’ (1994), ‘T2 3-D: Battle Across Time’ and ‘Eraser’ (both 1996), ‘Batman & Robin’ (1997) and ‘Collateral Damage’ ‘ (2002). After the 3rd film in the Terminator series ‘Terminator 3 – Rise of the Machines’, Arnold Schwarzenegger initially interrupted his acting career in 2003 to devote himself to politics from 2003 to 2011 as governor of California. After the end of his political career, he first played a sheriff in ‘The Last Stand’ (2013), before other films like ‘Escape Plan’ (2013), ‘Maggie’ (2015) or ‘Vendetta – All that remained to him was revenge ‘ (2017) and of course the 5th and 6th part of the Terminator series in 2015 and 2019 followed.
