Axel Schulz (born November 9, 1968 in Bad Zarov) is a German professional boxer, world and European champion.
early life
From 1982 Schulz boxed in Frankfurt for the forward club in the army and later became youth champion of the GDR. At the Junior European Championships in Denmark in 1986, Schulz won the light heavyweight gold and was GDR heavyweight champion in 1988 under the leadership of Manfred cloud. In 1989 he won the Hull Tournament, followed by a silver medal at the European Championships in Athens and a bronze medal at the World Championships in Moscow, losing to Felix Savona in the final.
Career
Schultz made his professional ring debut in 1990. In his 14th fight he won the German title. On December 19, 1992, he won an EBU European title with undefeated Nigerian Henry Akinvade. A rematch took place six months later, in which Schultz recorded his first loss. After the loss, Schultz spent 5 wins and defeated a former world champion, American James Smith.
After this fight, Axel entered the IBF championship fight with the legendary George Foreman. In the fight, Foreman was awarded a decision by a majority of the judges. The decision was quite controversial and the IBF ordered a rematch. Foreman refused and the IBF stripped him of his title.
In December 1995, a fight for the vacant IBF title took place between Axel Schulz and undefeated South African François Botha. Botha won on points but was later stripped of his title due to a positive steroid test. Schultz again fought for the vacant IBF title. This time with ex-champion Michael Moorer. In a difficult and hard fought fight by a slight advantage, Murer won via a split decision of the judges. Schultz suffered his third defeat.
In August 1997, Schultz defeated Irishman Kevin McBride. In February 1998 he defeated Julius Francis in the EBU Eliminator bouts. Before he entered the title fight, he fought a rating fight against the American Richard Mason. Schultz won on points but was knocked out for the first time in his professional career. After this fight, Schulz did not step into the ring for more than a year.
Nevertheless, Axel Schulz collected himself and went into the well-deserved fight for the EBU European Championship title. On September 25, 1999, Schulz competed for the vacant EBU title against Olympic champion Vladimir Klitschko. Klitschko dominated the battle and began unilaterally beating the German in the 8th round. The referee stopped the fight. This was the first early defeat in Axel Schulz’s career. After this fight, Schultz left boxing.
After 7 years, he returned to the ring and spent a fight against Brian Minto, which he also lost. In the fourth round Minto sent Axel to the boards, and in the fifth round he started punching him hard, hitting below the waist for which the American was cautioned. In the break between rounds 6 and 7, Schulz refused to continue the fight.

Schulz has been working voluntarily with basketball player Tim Olbrecht and Berlin ice hockey player Marcel Noebels since the end of 2016 as ambassadors for the Ernst Prost Foundation, which was founded by former boss Liqui Moly. He supports the foundation through charitable campaigns such as jersey auctions and draws attention to donations through his fame. Schulz was also the patron saint of the Grasbeißerbande e. V.”, which aims to raise awareness of the issue of death.
Axel Schulz has been married since March 2006 and has two daughters. He was used as a villain on a German tour of the WWC (World Wrestling Championship), but refused to comply with the organizers’ requirements and show risky maneuvers. In mid-February 2007, it was announced that Schultz suffered a stroke just a week after fighting Brian Minto. The reason for this was a fivefold increase in platelet concentration. Schultz is said to have been diagnosed with a stroke in September 2006, but that didn’t stop him from getting in the ring with Brian Minto.
On June 23, 2012, it was announced that an amazing meeting between Schultz and his former opponent Botha had taken place. The latter took the opportunity to make an honest gesture and present Schultz with the controversial world championship belt, which he received in his time (see above). Axel Schulz was hired as an unofficial employee by the GDR Ministry for State Security in 1986, codenamed “Marcus”. After Schultz failed to provide the desired information about people and incidents in his reports, the Secret Service stopped working with him.
In May 2017 he was appointed the first beer ambassador in Brandenburg. On October 6, 2017, Schulz was a guest at a comedy show with Oliver Velke. During coverage of the 2018 Winter Olympics, Schulz was a guest on Eurosport 1 and TLC’s 18-year program. On the occasion of Schulz’s 50th anniversary on November 9, 2018, Spiegel Online paid tribute to him with the following words: “He lost all the big fights. Nevertheless, Axel Schulz has been the most popular German heavyweight boxer since Max Schmeling. ”
