Cher is an American singer and actress. She is considered one of the greatest and most successful pop icons and richest singers of our time.
Cherilyn Sarkisian was born in El Centro, California, United States. She was raised by her mother, Georgia, and her adoptive father, Gilbert LaPiere, after her parents divorced. Cher dropped out of high school at the age of 16 due to tool disorder dyslexia.
In 1962, Cher met singer Sonny Bono, whom she married two years later. Her husband introduced her in 1964 as a backing singer in the recording studio of the famous music producer Phil Spector. At the beginning, Cher did not sing her own records, but on those of other artists. The tide turned when Cher teamed up with her husband and they formed the duo Sonny & Cher. The first joint song “I got you babe” was released in 1965. Within three weeks the song sold three million copies and became a world hit. Five more singles followed, including “Little Man” and “The beat goes on”. These all ended up in the international top 20 hits. But Cher appeared not only as a duo, but also as a solo singer. In the same year that she found success with her husband, Cher also made a name for herself as a solo artist. With the song “All I really want to do”, which she covered by Bob Dylan, the American landed her first number 1 hit. More big hits followed. In 1970, Cher and her husband started their own show in Las Vegas. Later, this show was repurposed into a TV show. The successful duo divorced in 1973, and as a result Cher only continued to pursue her solo career. From this point on, she no longer only appeared as a singer, but also acted successfully as an actress. In the 1980s, little was heard of the media icon in public. Only at the end of the 80s did she become more of a focus again: her albums “Cher” and “Heart of Stone” sold more than 20 million copies. In the 90s, the American was able to build on the success and even expand it further. Cher’s last album “Cher Gold” was released in 2005, after which things became a little quieter for the artist. Between 2018 and 2019 she went on tour with her “Here we go again tour”. The songs of the pop band “Abba”, which she covers on this tour, are the focus there. The songs were released as an album in autumn 2018.
“I Got You Babe” by “Sonny & Cher” became an overnight hit. The video for the single is considered the first music video ever. It was recorded on the international music show Top of the Pops. “Sonny & Cher” is also considered to be the most successful artist couple. The duo sold over 80 million records. The two big hits of the duo “All I ever need is you” and “A cowboy’s work is never done” reached the international top 10 charts and were rewarded with a Grammy. During Cher’s heyday between 1965 and 1971, she earned around $30 million as a solo artist alone. During this time, the singer was also featured ten times in the internationally renowned fashion magazine “Vogue”. In addition, Cher was able to impress as an actress and won Emmys for some of her roles. She has also been nominated several times for the Golden Globe. Cher released a few more albums in the ’90s, all of which made it into the international charts. With the release of the album “Believe” in 1998, she launched her most popular piece of music. In 2005, Cher’s well-known, long-running “Farewell Tour” ended. The entire tour grossed her $250 million. In 2007, the tour even entered the Guinness Book of Records as the most successful tour of all time. Cher has received numerous awards throughout her career, including an Oscar, lifetime achievement awards and more.
“All of us invent ourselves. Some of us just have more imagination than others.” – [“Wir alle erfinden uns selbst. Manche von uns haben dabei mehr Phantasie als andere.”]
“Until you’re ready to look foolish, you’ll never have the possibility of being great.” – [Solange du nicht soweit bist dumm auszuschauen, wirst du niemals die Möglichkeit haben großartig zu werden.”]
Cher’s extraordinary look shaped the beginning of her career. Her hippie look from the 1960s and her long black hair are still her trademark today and, combined with her singing and her performance, made her performances so legendary. In addition, Cher is known for her countless cosmetic surgeries, to which she was always open.
