Christiano Ronaldo is a Portuguese soccer player.
Christiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro was born on the Portuguese island of Madeira. Together with three siblings, he grew up in poor circumstances. Already at the young age of only three years Ronaldo was enthusiastic about football and started with the sport. As an eight-year-old he played for amateur club CF Andorinha. Ronaldo’s talent was noticed early on and just two years later Madeira’s two leading clubs, Nacional Funchal and Marítimo Funchal, were showing great interest. Ronaldo finally chose the Nacional club. At the age of 12 he did a short trial at Sporting Lisbon and then moved there.
From then on, Ronalda trained with other players in the department that looked after young talent. His great talent and enormous ball skills convinced him that in the years that followed, Ronaldo became the first youngster from Sporting Lisbon to be used for the U16, 17, 18, reserve team and first team in a single season. The Portuguese also attracted international attention at the U17 European Championship. Big English clubs like Liverpool FC, Manchester United and Arsenal FC vied for the young Ronaldo. The Italian top club Juventus Turin and Spain’s FC Barcelona also showed great interest in him. In 2003, after various negotiations, Ronaldo decided to move to Manchester United. Already in his first game, he was able to convince both fans and experts with his ball skills, and at the end of the season he was voted “Player of the Season” by Manchester United fans. The 2005/2006 season also showed the great skill of the world footballer: During this time he scored Manchester United’s thousandth Premier League goal and at the end of the season a total of 12 goals. Ronaldo also scored seven goals for the Portuguese national team that year.
Ronaldo made his breakthrough in August 2003 when he switched to top English club Manchester United for around 17 million euros. He was to take the midfield position where David Beckham once played. Ronaldo was given the historic shirt number seven, previously worn by great club legends. In the 2005/2006 season, he came 20th in the “World Footballer of the Year” poll. Ronaldo enjoyed three English championships in six years with Manchester United and a Champions League victory. In 2009, the Portuguese also had a career highlight: Ronaldo switched from Manchester United to Real Madrid for a record fee of 94 million euros. The purchase was not only worthwhile for the footballer himself, but also for the club: With Ronaldo in the squad, Real Madrid won the Champions League four times, the FIFA Club World Cup three times, the Spanish championship in 2012 and 2017 and the Spanish championship twice spanish cup. On top of that, he was top scorer several times, “European Footballer of the Year” and “World Footballer of the Year”. The Portuguese national team also benefited from Ronaldo’s talent: Portugal became European champions in 2016. Ronalda is currently playing for top Italian club Juventus Turin, where he switched in 2018 for a transfer fee of 112 million euros.
