Clueso’s real name is Thomas Hübner and he is a German musician, songwriter and author. The sympathetic Erfurt was not always so successful, because he describes his youth as difficult. In recent years he has made a name for himself mainly with German songs, he writes most of his songs himself. In this article we take a closer look at his career and reveal some details about Clueso.
Thomas Hübner grew up in Ichtershausen near Thuringia. According to his own statements, he had a very difficult time at school. For this reason, he finished his schooling with a secondary school certificate and then began an apprenticeship as a hairdresser, which he did not complete.
Clueso started music at the age of 15, he was part of various projects at the beginning, such as with the Wostock MCs.
Together they had many performances and toured different cities in Germany, during which time Clueso honed his skills as a rapper and singer.
After he broke off his hairdressing apprenticeship, he met his current manager, Andreas Welskop. The first releases were released on vinyl, but these were not released for sale and were only used for promotion.
A year later, in 1999, he moved to Cologne with his manager and was offered a contract with the “Four Music” label. He also accepted this contract and from now on produced his songs in the 10vor10 studios.
The first album entitled “Text und Ton” was released on this label and was released in 2001. From then on, Clueso played various concerts at various festivals with his band and sometimes with a DJ set. Over the years he has played more than 100 live concerts in German-speaking countries.
So he started his professional career at the age of 18 and recorded his first album at that time. At the age of 22 he moved back to his hometown of Erfurt and recorded a tape as the frontman of the Rowdy Club. The following year he began production of his second album entitled Gute Musik. Well-known artists from the German rap scene took part in this album, including Blumentopf, Marcel Aue and also the blues guitarist Jürgen Kerth.
Compared to his first album, the second album contained significantly fewer rap songs. In addition to hip-hop topics, the consequences of cannabis consumption were also discussed.
Due to the move, it was no longer so easy for him to work with his original band, which is why he decided to bring musicians from Thuringia over to him.
His third album followed in 2006-2007, during which time Clueso played as support act at Herbert Grönemeyer concerts.
This year he was honored by 1live with a nomination in the category “Best Live Act”.
In September of the same year, his single “Lala” was released, which was recorded as the soundtrack for the film “Leroy”.
In the years that followed, two more albums were released, including a live album. For his fifth album he worked with stars like Udo Lindenberg and Wolfgang Niedecken.
From 2001-2018 Clueso released a total of eight albums, with his last five albums from 2008 to date being his greatest commercial success. From his fifth album, he has also continuously received various awards. In 2011 he was nominated for the MTV Europe Music Award as Best German Act, which Lena-Mayer-Landrut won this year. In the same year he again received the 1live crown as best artist and was even able to outperform musicians like Herbert Grönemeyer.
From 2012-2014 he produced his sixth album and even founded his own label, with this album he reached gold status.
For his other productions, he continued to rely on the support of well-known musicians from the German-speaking music scene. He was able to reach number one in the German album charts with three albums and was also successful in Austria and Switzerland. He has been awarded the 1live Krone as best artist several times, and he has also won the same prize for best single twice.
Some facts from his private life are known about Clueso, so it is known that he likes to describe himself as a mess. But sometimes it overcomes him and then he sweeps through at home and makes himself comfortable. Basically, however, he likes it when it “looks lived in” at his home and sometimes when clothes are just lying around.
He likes to write his songs spontaneously, when an idea comes to him he just takes what he has at hand (laptop, piece of paper and pen), depending on the situation.
When Clueso isn’t on tour, he likes to treat himself to a visit to the sauna, where he can really relax while sweating.
In his free time, he likes to let it all out, so that it doesn’t attract attention, he goes to parties where nobody knows him!
