Dirk Ströer was born on June 8th, 1969 as the son of entrepreneur Heinz W. Ströer (1938-2004). As early as 1963, Dirk Ströer’s father built up the company “Outside Advertising Heinz W. Ströer GmbH & Co. KG” in Cologne. In cooperation with Udo Müller, this company became “Ströer City Marketing GmbH” in 1990. Finally, in 2002, Dirk Ströer became a shareholder in the company now known as “Ströer Out-of-Home Media AG”. Before that, after graduating from high school, he studied business administration and founded his own company – “Media Ventures GmbH”.
After studying business administration, Dirk Ströer initially founded “City Design GmbH” in 1998, which dealt with the marketing of information media in Germany. At the beginning of 1999, Dirk Ströer was initially responsible for setting up and supporting the Polish national company of the Ströer Group in Warsaw. Towards the end of the same year, he became self-employed by founding orangemedia.de GmbH and neu.de GmbH in Hamburg. The foundation stone for “Media Ventures GmbH” was thus laid. In the years that followed, “Media Ventures GmbH” developed portals such as weg.de, pkw.de and mp3.de into successful business models. However, Dirk Ströer’s main source of income is his position as managing partner of Ströer SE & Co. KGaA.
Today’s Ströer SE & Co. KGaA is now a listed, international company with headquarters in Cologne and employs over 12,500 people. According to the company, Dirk Ströer holds 29.95 percent of the share capital of Ströer SE & Co. KGaA and is therefore the company’s largest shareholder. In addition to Germany, Ströer SE & Co. KGaA is mainly active in Poland, Turkey, Great Britain, Spain, the Netherlands and Belgium. The company deals with the marketing of online and outdoor advertising and is one of the largest providers of out-of-home media in Germany. The company’s business consists to a large extent of the maintenance and care of advertising space, such as billboards. In 2019, group sales totaled 1.6 billion euros, which means an increase of 6 percent compared to the previous year.
“We can learn from the American mindset that it’s better to try something and possibly fail than never do anything new. In that sense, young people who have not had success with a business idea should still be given a new chance – especially if they learn from the first attempt.” (In an interview with RP Online)
Dirk Ströer is of the opinion that “complete data security on the Internet does not exist”. Therefore, one should “Never send trade secrets via SMS”. (In an interview with RP Online)
Dirk Ströer bought Cape Town’s most expensive house in 2019. According to the Sunday Times, it is a ten bedroom villa at the foot of Lion’s Head, a mountain with one of the most beautiful views in Table Bay. The villa is said to have cost 290 million rand, which equates to around 18 million euros.
The media entrepreneur Dirk Ströer is a member of the Cologne carnival club “Goldene Jungs” and likes to let it rip. In addition to normal skiing, his leisure activities also include water skiing.
The start-up “Smartsleep”, known from “The Lion’s Den”, was able to secure Dirk Ströer as an investor through his investment company “Media Ventures GmbH” alongside Carsten Maschmeyer and Ralf Dümmel. The chewable tablets that the start-up sells are intended to improve sleep. According to his own statements, the new shareholder Dirk Ströer even uses the chewable tablets himself on his trips to be able to sleep better.
