The Swiss singer and music producer DJ BoBo is a well-known representative of Eurodance. With his fourth single, “Somebody Dance With Me”, he had his international breakthrough in the early 1990s. Due to his songs from the dance-pop area, DJ BoBo is also referred to as the “King of Dance” by the media and his fans. In 2017 he celebrated his 25th stage anniversary on the Mystorial Tour. Up to this point, DJ BoBo had already sold 15 million records and received numerous awards, including 150 gold awards. DJ BoBo has been married to Nancy Baumann since 2001, and they have a son and a daughter.
DJ BoBo was born René Peter Baumann on January 5, 1968 in Kölliken, a rural community in the Swiss canton of Aargau. His Italian father Luigi Cipriano left his mother before BoBo was born. DJ BoBo’s childhood was marked by his abusive stepfather and the sadness of the provincial conditions. Originally he wanted to be a locomotive engineer. DJ Bobo earned his first money by collecting moss for his mother’s flower shop. DJ BoBo discovered his passion for music in the 1980s. After completing elementary school, he first began training as a baker and confectioner, which he successfully completed. BoBo made his first attempts as a DJ at the youth center in Tuchlaube in Aarau. Shortly thereafter, he also played in various discotheques in the vicinity. At the Swiss DJ Championships in 1985, DJ BoBo took second place.
DJ BoBo established himself as a professional DJ and DJed at Don Paco and Hazyland for a while. After he received the offer to produce his own song, his first single entitled “I Love You” was created. After only moderate success and two further releases, DJ BoBo achieved his international breakthrough in 1990 with his fourth single. “Somebody Dance with Me” landed in the top ten of the charts in Switzerland, Austria and Germany. The song went gold and marked the beginning of his career. In 1996 DJ BoBo released the album “World in Motion”, which was awarded platinum in Germany and double platinum in Switzerland. In the same year, DJ BoBo was a special guest on Michael Jackson’s history tour and was accompanied on his own tour by the then unknown boy band *NSYNC. In addition to performances in Europe, DJ BoBo also gave concerts in parts of Asia and South America. In 2016 he was a judge on the RTL show “Dance Dance Dance” for the first time. By 2017, DJ BoBo had received two Diamond, 29 Platinum, and 150 Gold awards.
DJ BoBo has already been honored ten times with the World Music Award as “The World’s Best Selling Swiss Recording Artist”. More than five million viewers have already visited his elaborately designed live tours, which are planned for at least a year. After the release of the album “World In Motion” in late 1996, DJ BoBo became the first western artist to visit Guangzhou, China during the 20-day tour of Asia. 25 million viewers followed the appearance in a Brazilian television show on television. For Coca Cola he produced his hit “Chihuahua”, which was heard in the summer of 2002 as background music for a commercial. Since October 2006, DJ BoBo has been the national ambassador for the United Nations World Food Program (WFP). That year he was also honored with a diamond award for one million records sold in Switzerland. DJ BoBo has released a total of 35 chart-toppers by 2017 and sold millions of CDs worldwide.
DJ BoBo said of Kylie Minogue in an interview with the Stuttgarter Nachrichten in 2008: “Kylie and I are not at all dissimilar, we both stand for the dance thing – but she’s glitz and glamor, I’m more of the street department.”
In the run-up to his Dancing Las Vegas show, DJ BoBo said: “With this show I’m bringing a piece of Las Vegas to Europe. It will be even more spectacular, even bigger, even more glamorous and will offer even more entertainment than my previous shows.”
When asked about his successful career, DJ BoBo said: “I guess the secret is that I can attract and gather around the best people who will allow me to conjure up something on stage that people will like.”

Taking a break is also a tip to stay in business for a longer period of time. After the release of “Live in Concert”, the singer withdrew to his home country of Switzerland and deliberately avoided radio and television. During this time he was able to gather enough energy for his exhausting shows. DJ BoBo keeps himself physically fit with healthy food. He avoids alcohol, cigarettes and sweets and counts vegetables among his most important foods. DJ Bobo also occasionally plays tennis, soccer and ice hockey.
