early life

Drake was born in Toronto in 1986 to an American father and a Canadian mother. His father Dennis Graham is an African American musician and was born in the city of Memphis in the US state of Tennessee. He is a devout Catholic and has played drums for artists such as Jerry Lee Lewis. His brother and Drake’s uncle Larry Graham is best known for playing bass in the band Sly and the Family Stone. Drake’s mother was Jewish and worked as a florist and governess.

Drake was just five years old when his parents divorced. His father moved back to his native Tennessee while Drake lived and grew up with his mother in Toronto. The two initially lived in the migrant West End before relocating to affluent Forest Hill. Raised by his mother to be Jewish, Drake says he faced bullying at school because of his skin color and beliefs. In high school, Drake was interested in acting and dropped out of high school because of his acting career. He was discovered by an acting agent at the age of 15 and rose to prominence in 2001 for a role on the youth series Degrassi: The Next Generation. 5 years later he discovered rap music and released a series of mixtapes.

Drake received media attention through his musical productions with the song “Replacement Girl” together with artist Trey Songz, which was featured in a television program. Despite the support of many well-known artists such as Kanye West, Jay-Z and Lil Wayne, a record deal did not materialize for the time being. He released the single “Best I’ve Ever Had” in 2009 which became a huge hit in the United States. This resulted in a competition between various major labels for the artist. Stylistically, Drake’s music can be described as a mixture of hip hop and RnB.
