Eko Fresh, whose real name is Ekrem Bora, is a German rapper, actor and owner of the German Dream label. Eko married his girlfriend Sarah in 2016 and had a son that same year.
Eko Fresh was born in Cologne in 1983. His mother is from Turkey and has Kurdish roots, while his father is the well-known Turkish musician Nedim Hazar, who fled to Germany in 1980 for political reasons. Eko grew up in his single mother’s house in Mönchengladbach and partly in the Kalk district of Cologne. At the age of 15 he started rapping before two years later he met the rapper Kool Savas, who invited him to his place in Berlin.
With the help of Kool Savas, Eko released his first EP in 2001 entitled Let’s Get Down To It. All instrumentals were produced by Sava’s then-girlfriend Melbeatz and the EP was released through the Royal Bunker label. Eko then became Savas’ permanent back-up MC during performances. In 2002 he founded his own label “Optik Records” with which Eko signed a contract and had several guest appearances on songs by Kool Savas. With his single “Der König von Deutschland”, released in 2003, Eko managed to get commercial attention for the first time. The single peaked at number five on the singles chart and Eko left the Opik Records label due to personal differences. Due to the previously received media attention, Eko became the focus of Sony/BMG boss Thomas Stein. He commissioned him to write songs for the pop singer Yvonne Catterfeld. The song “You’ve broken my heart”, in which Eko was a co-author, immediately reached number 1 in the German single charts. In 2004 the album “LOVE” was released together with Valezka, which was stylistically assigned to the RnB genre. The single of the same name was able to position itself at number 16 in the single charts, while the album only reached number 54 in the album charts. Shortly thereafter, Eko founded his own music label called “German Dream” and signed rappers such as Capkekz, Hakan Abi and Kay One, among others. The latter, however, switched to Bushido’s label “ersguterjunge” after a short time. From 2006 onwards, Eko was also featured more often on the label’s songs, including the song “Gheddo” that was created together with Bushido. At the end of 2006, Eko finally signed a contract with Bushido’s label.
In addition to his musical career, Eko is also an actor. In the series “Blockbustahz” and the feature film “3 Turks and a Baby” he plays the main role.
The rapper’s best release to date has been his seventh studio album, Eksodus. This went straight to number 1 in the German album charts and stayed in the top 100 charts for four weeks. The album sold around 50,000 copies by the summer of 2014. In Switzerland, the album was also able to enter at number 2.
In 2018, Eko received the Webvideo Award as a special award for social responsibility. The reason for this was his song “Aber” in which Eko musically addresses the cultural differences between migrants and right-wing extremists. Eko also plays a role in the book adaptation of Sebastian Fitzek’s novel “Amokspiel”.
“I do it for them and I rap against racial hatred
But everything Kanaks ask me is whether I’ve fasted
Actually an artist whose music pumps through his heart
But when I go on a talk show, the focus is on my origin”
“As if there were only a choice between Erdogan and Böhmermann
Only the choice between Bertelsmann and Dönermann
As if there were only the choice between black and white
Be a do-gooder or an asshole, Antifa and a Nazi pig”
Eko was a huge fan of Kool Savas growing up. At the age of 17 he contacted him and invited him to his birthday party. Savas actually showed up and Eko rapped him a few lines of the song. Savas was immediately enthusiastic and invited Eko to his place in Berlin, from which the later musical collaboration developed.
