Emma Watson is a British actress best known for her role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter films. She is also known as an activist for equality and women’s rights.
Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson was born in France’s capital Paris, where she also spent the first five years of her life. The family then moved to England. Her parents, who both worked as lawyers, divorced when Emma was seven years old. Emma then grew up with her younger brother Alex with their mother in Oxford, UK. At school she excelled with very good grades and at the age of seven she won first prize in a poetry competition. She also took part in a school theater group while she was still at school, where Emma Watson played the leading role in several plays.
In 2000, Emma Watson auditioned for the role of “Hermione Granger” in the film adaptation of the first part of “Harry Potter” – with great success. The British prevailed against 4,000 applicants. She played the role of the famous sorceress in all eight parts of the film series. In the meantime, Emma Watson modeled for the British luxury clothing brand “Burberry”. In addition to her successful film career, the Briton studied English literature from 2009 to 2011 at the renowned American elite University Brown. She later continued her studies at Oxford University. In 2014, Emma Watson graduated with a bachelor’s degree. The actress is still a strong advocate for women’s rights and has been the UN Special Envoy for Girls’ and Women’s Rights since June 2014. She founded the HeForShe campaign, which aims to encourage boys and men to stand up for women’s rights.
