Farin Urlaub was born Jan Vetter on October 27, 1963 in West Berlin. He is active in many areas, for example Farin is also involved in photography and also appears as a solo artist. However, he is known to a wide audience as a founding member of the band “Die Ärzte”. One of his trademarks is his bright blonde hairdo, which makes him stand out as the band’s frontman.
In addition, he counts as the creative head of the band, co-writes many of the lyrics and also wrote many well-known songs for the doctors.
Although he always keeps his private life out of the public eye as much as possible, a lot has become known from his early days.
It is known that he lived with his mother in the Moabit district of Berlin until he was seven years old. He then spent his youth in Frohnau until he was 18. During this time his mother liked to play songs by the Beatles and that’s how he really came into contact with music for the first time.
At the age of nine he took guitar lessons from an older woman, during which time he acquired the most important standards for playing the guitar. He regularly played the guitar on school trips and holiday camps to share with friends and teachers. However, the associated criticism was anything but positive, because his future music teacher also advised him against doing anything with music. But maybe it was exactly this criticism that Farin needed at the time. First he attended the Realschule and the Gymnasium which he finished with Abitur. At the age of 16 he had his hair cut and bleached blonde for the first time on a school trip to London. He joined the punk scene and broke off a degree in archeology to pursue a music career.
Soon after, in 1981, Farin met musician Dirk Felsenheimer (aka Bela B). The two played together in his band because Dirk was looking for a guitarist.
A short time later, in 1982, the band around Dirk and Farin broke up and the result was a new band called “Die Ärzte”. A steep rise followed, several albums followed within the following years, the band celebrated commercial success and played many live performances.
But in 1988, promptly at the peak of their success, Farin Urlaub suggested the band should split up. This certainly shocked the fans of the band, because the separation was actually implemented. After that there was a longer break, until finally in 1993 the band got together again. Farin also started a solo career in 2001 and released a total of four albums plus one live album between 2001-2014.
There were many highlights in Farin Urlaub’s 30-year career, with the doctors he was sometimes overwhelmed with prizes and awards. They scooped pretty much all the awards that exist in the music business, including the Echo, the World Music Award, the Comet several times, as well as the Bravo Otto and the MTV Europe Music Award for best German act.
Farin was also very successful with his solo career and his albums sold well. In Germany he was in the top 3 of the charts with each of his albums, and he also entered the charts in Austria and Switzerland.
He also acted in a few B-Movies, already in 1985 in the film “Richy Guitar” by Michael Laux and in 2015 in the film Lust and Sound in West Berlin.
As a photographer, he has also published a number of illustrated books, because one of his great passions is travelling. The proceeds from the first illustrated book were donated to the organization “Doctors Without Borders”.
Farin Urlaub is a self-confessed non-smoker and non-alcoholic. In addition, he decided in 1987 to lead a life as a pescetarian. This is a diet that avoids eating meat, but not fish.
He is always privately involved in charitable causes and supports organizations such as Greenpeace and Amnesty International with monetary donations.
Regarding his own guitar skills, he says that he has mastered the rhythm guitar quite well, but it has taken 30 years to do so.
His own goal in life is to see every country in the world, in 2011 he had already traveled to 117 countries.
His travels have also made him very fluent in languages and over the years he has learned several languages including English, Latin and Portuguese.
His hobbies include motorcycling, reading and also designing guitars.
So Farin is a true all-rounder in various areas and, above all, a very warm person, as you can see from these facts.
