George Walton Lucas Jr. is an American film producer, director and screenwriter who is best known for the films in the Star Wars saga and the Indiana Jones film series. Through his commitment and his work, he is considered a luminary of the film industry. According to Forbes magazine, he is one of the richest people in the world and sold his company Lucasfilms to the Walt Disney Company for 4 billion US dollars in 2012. According to Lucas, he wants to donate a large part of the proceeds for educational purposes.
George Lucas was born in the small town of Modesto, California. His parents, Dorothy and George Lucas Senior, had three other children in addition to George Junior. George Lucas Sr. also owned a stationery shop and had the expectation that his son George Jr. would inherit and continue the business. Since her mother Dorothy was rarely at home due to her job in a hospital, the father of the family was largely responsible for raising the children. He attached great importance to a strict and conservative upbringing and always endeavored to maintain the children’s work ethic.
From an early age, George Lucas Junior was fascinated by books such as Treasure Island, Robinson Crusoe, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, as well as comics by Donald Duck and Superman and the stories of Robin Hood. In addition to a keen interest in pop culture, Lucas was also interested in historically relevant backgrounds and also read many biographies.
After moving to an isolated ranch house in the 1950’s, Lucas attended Thomas Downey High School. There he was known as a mediocre student and at that time he was beginning to develop a keen interest in motorcycles. He spent many hours in his free time working on his car and had set himself the goal of starting a racing career.
After graduating from junior college, Lucas enrolled at the University of Southern California Los Angeles film school. There he made his first contacts in the film industry and published many smaller student film projects, which earned him a great reputation among his lecturers. After graduating from film school, Lucas was granted a six-month residency at a Warner Bros. studio thanks to a Warner Memorial grant. There he met the well-known director Francis Ford Coppola and a close friendship developed between the two.
Lucas was appointed associate general manager of Zoetrope Studios, through which he released his first feature film, THX 1138. In the years that followed, 1973-1974, Lucas wrote his screenplay for the film Star Wars. The basic idea included the classic fight between good and evil transferred to a futuristic setting. He got a contract with the film studio 20th Century Fox which guaranteed him a budget of 3 million US dollars. Even before the Star Wars screenplay idea, Lucas had realized a script for a film called Indiana Jones. The cinematic implementation was implemented a few years later in collaboration with Steven Spielberg. In the following years Lucas was also involved in several other film productions as a producer, screenwriter or director.
George Lucas’ undisputed milestone is the first Star Wars film, “Star Wars.” The film grossed approximately $640 million at the time of its release. At that time it was considered the most financially successful film of all time and was able to hold this title for a full six years. “Star Wars” has grossed $892 million to date. This box office result was topped by the 1999 film “Star Wars Episode 1”. This played a total of over 900 million US dollars worldwide.
“The Star Wars films are my kids. I loved them, I created them, I’m very intimately involved in them and I sold them to the white slavers.”
“You can’t sell newspapers by saying nice things about something, you can only sell newspapers by creating controversies. Critics aren’t creators, they’re destroyers.”
George Lucas himself never received an Oscar for his work. However, he has been able to earn over 4.4 billion dollars with his Star Wars films. Lucas was able to earn over 20 billion dollars for Star Wars merchandising alone.
