He was also active as a screenwriter and in production in both film series. Ice Cube’s stage name literally means ice cubes, but it also stands for a type of gemstone. He gave himself the name as a result of a dispute with his brother. He threatened to put him in a fridge and not let him out until he was an ice cube.
early life
Ice Cube was born in 1969 in Compton, a suburb of Los Angeles. He was the youngest of four children born to his parents, African-American UCLA employees Hosea and Doris Jackson. Ice Cube grew up in Los Angeles in the South Central district, which was heavily dominated by the African American population. He attended William Taft High School, 30 kilometers from his home in the Woodland Hills district. At the same time, founding members of House of Pain, Daniel O’Connor and Erik Schrody, were also at his school. At the age of 15, Ice Cube met Dr. Know Dre and the initial friendship resulted in a musical get-together. In 1986 Ice Cube formed the Rapformation Stereo Crew with rapper K-Dee. Shortly after the founding, Dr. Dr’s cousin Sir Jinx joined the group, which changed its name to CIA (Cru in Action) and released its first EP in 1987.
Career
The CIA group soon disbanded and Ice Cube founded together with Dr. Dre and Eazy-E the group NWA Ice Cube met the then drug dealer Eazy-E through Dr.Dre. At his request, Ice Cube wrote a song for Eazy-E, which was initially turned down but was eventually released on the group’s debut album, entitled NWA and the Posse. However, the great success of the debut record did not materialize and so Ice Cube moved to Phoenix, Arizona for a short time to study architectural drawings for two semesters. However, he returned in 1988 and recorded a second album with NWA, Straight Outta Compton, which was not only the group’s first commercially successful West Coast hip hop album, but also the group’s breakthrough. The main themes dealt with lyrically on the album were the hard life of street gangs on the streets of Los Angeles and the police brutality faced by many young African Americans. Due to internal differences, Ice Cube left NWA in 1989. Four solo albums followed before he dedicated himself to his film career for the first time in 1995. That year Ice Cube wrote the screenplay for the comedy Friday and also co-starred in the film adaptation with Chris Tucker. Musically, more solo albums and live concerts followed, as well as a collaboration with the metal band Korn. From the year 2000, Ice Cube took a musical break to concentrate on his film projects and also founded the film production company “Cube Vision”. He was seen in films such as “xXx 2 – The Next Level” and “Hart am Limit”. From 2006, Ice Cube showed more musical presence again and released several solo albums.
