Short introduction
Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Corey Carter, is an American entrepreneur, rapper and record producer. He is also known by the aliases Hov, Hova, J-Hova, and Jigga. He also served as Chief Executive Officer of famed hip hop label Def Jam and is the owner of Rocawear. His wife is the well-known RnB singer Beyonce, to whom he has been married since 2008.
early life
Jay-Z was born in 1969 in Brooklyn, New York, to a single mother. His youth was marked by hard times on the streets of Brooklyn. In the early days of his musical career he called himself Jazzy, since there were already many artists with this pseudonym, he renamed himself Jay-Z and has kept this name to this day. Before he founded his first own label called “Roc-a-Fella Records” together with Damon Dash, he tried several times unsuccessfully to start as a rapper. In 1996, Jay-Z released his first album called “Reasonable Doubt” through “Roc-a-Fella Records”, which attracted attention in the scene, but did not achieve any financial success.
Career
In 1997 Jay-Z achieved his first financial success with his second album “In my Lifetime, Vol.1”. Entry at number three on the US album chart laid the foundation for Jay-Z’s commercial success. With the follow-up “Vol.2… Hard Knock Life” he switched his musical focus from hard rap passages to mainstream sounds for the first time. The album reached number 1 in the album charts in its home country and was also able to assert itself for the first time in the German album charts at number 76. A total of three singles from the album were released. A year later “Vol.3” of the album series was released, which musically went even more in the pop direction than its predecessors. As a result, Jay-Z received strong criticism from his fan base and the rap scene. Despite everything, this and several subsequent albums were extremely successful. However, Jay-Z is not only very active in music, but also in the fashion industry. He founded the fashion label “Roc-A-Wear” and launched his own shoe collection in collaboration with the sports brand Reebok, entitled “S. Carter”. In 2004, hip hop label Def Jam Records acquired Jay-Z’s label Roc-A-Fella Records and appointed him as chief executive officer. His contract expired in 2007 and was not renewed. In 2003, Jay-Z announced the end of his career with a final album entitled The Black Album, which would be his last release before retiring from the music business. After a break of a few years, he came back and released the comeback album “Kingdom Come” three years after the announced end of his career. Each of his subsequent albums has reached #1 on the US album charts.
