Jens Spahn is a German politician and has been Federal Minister of Health since March 14, 2018. The politician has also been the deputy party leader of the CDU since January 2021 and was very present in the media in 2020 and at the beginning of 2021 due to the Corona crisis. Also because of his often very direct manner, Jens Spahn has polarized several times in the past.
Growing up with two younger siblings in a district of Ahaus in Westmünsterland, Spahn graduated from the Episcopal Canisius School in Ahaus in 1999. The current federal minister then trained as a bank clerk, which he successfully completed in 2001. At that time, Jens Spahn was already an active politician and a member of the Junge Union and the CDU. Between 2003 and 2017, the politician studied political science at the Fernuniversität Hagen in addition to his work as a member of the Bundestag, graduating with a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree. Despite his homosexuality, Spahn describes in an interview that the church is still an important part of him. In his youth, the politician was active as an altar boy.
In 1997, Spahn joined the CDU. From 1999 to 2006 he was active as district chairman of the Junge Union Borken and since 2005 he has also been chairman of the CDU district association in Borken. Jens Spahn was directly elected to the Bundestag in 2002, 2005, 2009, 2013 and 2017 and has been a member of parliament ever since. From 2009 to 2015, the politician was chairman of the health working group and was also health policy spokesman for the CDU/CSU parliamentary group. According to some sources, during the years of his work as health policy spokesman, Spahn also worked as a pharmaceutical lobbyist and was paid for it. This parallel lobbying earned the politician some criticism.
The highlight of Jens Spahn’s career so far is certainly his appointment as Federal Minister of Health on March 14, 2018. This appointment made Spahn the youngest minister in the current cabinet. Some of the draft laws that Spahn was involved in during his time as Health Minister were mostly positively received by the population. This includes, for example, the draft law for compulsory measles vaccination. The debate about a reorganization of organ donation, which Spahn again attracted public interest in 2019, brought him a lot of encouragement, even if the politician ultimately failed with his initiative.
At the beginning of the corona pandemic, Spahn was praised for his level-headed and direct action, but he is now also subject to a lot of criticism with regard to his corona policy.

“The rapidly increasing number of young binge drinkers being treated in German hospitals is unacceptable. Parents should be given a flat rate of 100 euros towards the cost of treatment to remind them of their responsibility.”
