Kanye West is one of the most successful rappers and hip hop and pop musicians in the world. Especially in his homeland, the USA, he enjoys a high level of recognition in the music scene, since he was instrumental in the fact that gangster rap, which had shaped the rap scene until then, developed into a more emotional music genre with deeper content, in which sometimes sung. In addition, Kanye West is also a music producer and fashion designer. Through his marriage to IT girl Kim Kardashian, whom he married in 2014, he also regularly dominates the tabloids. He has four children with Kim Kardashian, two of whom were born to surrogate mothers.
Kanye Omari West was born on June 6, 1977 in Atlanta and thus in the US state of Georgia. His parents were African American and separated when Kanye was little. His mother, Donda West – who died as a result of an operation in 2007 – was a professor of English and moved with him to Chicago after their separation, where she worked from then on as chair of the English department at Chicago State University. Thus, unlike his rapper colleagues, Kanye West grew up in financially stable circumstances. Influenced by Run-DMC, Public Enemy and the Wu-Tang Clan, he started rapping in third grade. He was a music producer from the 7th grade before, at 14, he met No ID, who was then an influential producer in Chicago. From then on, he took on the role of a mentor for Kanye West. He was already aiming for a music career, but his mother pushed him to get a college degree after he graduated from high school in 1995. Therefore, he first attended the American Academy of Arts and Chicago State University. But just a year later he broke off his education without a degree to pursue his music career. He then earned his first money by collaborating on an album for Grav, a rapper from Chicago. He even rapped himself on the album ‘Down to Earth’.
Towards the end of the 1990s, Kanye West really took off in the music industry. Here he initially produced successful albums for the rappers Foxy Brown and Jermaine Dupri. In addition, through Beanie Sigel, also a rapper, met Jay-Z, with whom he worked successfully from then on. In 2001, his collaboration on several songs on Jay-Z’s album ‘The Blueprint’ made him famous. Shortly thereafter he was signed to Roc-A-Fella Records and recorded his first solo album there. His debut album ‘The College Dropout’ was released in 2004. In the same year he also founded the record label GOOD Music before releasing his second album ‘Late Registration’ in 2005. It immediately went to number one on the Billboard charts. A further seven solo albums followed until 2019. In addition, Kanye West has been producing music for other artists since the 200s, including Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey, Ludacris and Janet Jackson. He has also acted in several films and television series and has published five books to date, most of them photographs. This makes Kanye West not only a successful solo artist, but also a producer and therefore rightly an important part of the entertainment industry.
Without a doubt, Kanye West experienced the highlights of his career with his nine solo albums and his five tours, one of which he completed (2011 – 2012) together with Jay-Z. Thanks to his successful music, he has meanwhile been awarded numerous prizes. These include 21 Grammy Awards, eight BET Awards, three BRIT Awards and various other smaller prizes.
- “I am a vessel of God. The biggest heartache in my life is that I can never see myself perform live.”
- “I have my astronaut family. Becoming famous is like being catapulted into space – sometimes without a space suit.”
- “Some people write novels and then they’re so boring and self-absorbed. I’m not a fan of books. It would never occur to me to want an autograph from a book. I pride myself on not reading books.”
- “I’ve been fooling everyone the whole time because I’m actually a great painter. I paint sonic paintings, and those sonic paintings make me what people think of when they say the name Kanye West.”
Kanye West has had an ambivalent relationship with the media, which has often labeled him as snobbish and overbearing. He was also involved in a serious car accident in 2002, which shaped his life and in which his jaw was broken three times – but just three weeks later he was back on stage and rapping. Finally, on May 11, 2015, Kanye West received an honorary doctorate from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago for his defining work in music, pop culture, and fashion
