Gustav Elijah Ar (November 1, 1996, Allentown), better known by the stage name Lil Peep (stylized as LiL PEEP. Usually referred to simply as Peep) – American rapper, singer, songwriter and model. He has been credited as one of the first post-emo revival musicians and his style of hip hop became known as emo rap.

Lil Peep was born in Allentown, PA, USA and grew up in Long Island, New York. Lil Peep began releasing music on Soundcloud under the alias Lil Peep from 2014 because his mother called him “Peep” when he was a child. He soon became popular on Soundcloud after releasing several mixtapes and collaborating with Lil Tracy. On August 15, 2017 he released his debut album Come Over When You’re Sober. Lil Peep reached the highest position on the Billboard Hot 100 in October 2018 with the track “Falling Down” by XXXTentacion – peaking at number 13. The single was certified Gold by the American Recording Association (RIAA) on November 8, 2018. This was Lil Peep’s first gold certification. His second studio album, Come Over When You’re Sober, was released posthumously on November 9, 2018 and debuted at number 4 on the Billboard 200 and became his first album to chart in the top 10 of the US.
Lil Peep was a frequent drug user due to mental health issues that led to his death on November 15, 2017. The Pima County Medical Expert’s Office confirmed that an accidental fentanyl-xanax overdose was the cause of death.
Career
Gustav Elijah Ar was born in Pennsylvania and grew up on the south shore of Long Island. His parents were Harvard graduates; They divorced when Gustav was still a teenager. His father worked as a college professor and his mother worked as an elementary school teacher. After dropping out of school, he graduated from school with the help of online courses. He soon became interested in music and started posting it on YouTube and Soundcloud.
At 17, Gustav moved to Los Angeles, where he lived in a rented apartment with his childhood friend, Brennan Savage, to work on his music career. The founder of the music group SchemaPosse, rapper JGRXXN, makes contact with Lil Peep and Ghostemane via social networks and points to the talent of the young people. After meeting in person, the performers invented the band SchemaBoyss and successfully toured the United States. However, due to creative differences, both Lil Peep and Ghostemane soon left SchemaPosse.
After leaving SchemaPosse and meeting Lil Tracy as well as other members of the emo trap band GothBoiClique, Gus joined them. In literally a year, Lil Peep took the combination of emo and rap to a world level.
In 2015, Lil Peep released his debut mixtape “Lil Peep; Part One,” which garnered 4,000 views on Soundcloud in its first week. Soon after, he released the Feelz mini-album and another mixtape, Live Forever.
In May 2017, Mineral accused Lil Peep of copyright infringement: The track “Hollywood Dreaming” performed jointly with musician Gab3 contained an unlicensed and unaccredited sample of the song “LoveLetterTypewriter” from Mineral’s 1998 album EndSerenading. In response to these claims, Gab3 noted that they were only trying to show love for the original composition.
