Short introduction
Mariah Carey is an American singer, songwriter, actress and record producer. She is particularly known for her remarkable vocal range. With over 200 million albums sold, she is one of the best-selling female music artists of all time.
early life
Carey was born on March 27, 1970 in Huntington, Long Island, New York to Alfred Roy Carey, a Venezuelan aeronautical engineer, and Patricia Carey, a vocal coach and opera singer. She has two older siblings, a brother, Morgan, and a sister, Alison. Carey’s parents divorced when she was three years old. She amazed her mother by imitating her opera singing at the age of two. Carey began taking singing lessons from the age of four. Eventually, she developed a voice that spanned five octaves. After graduating from Harborfields High School in Greenlawn, New York in 1987, Carey moved to Manhattan, where she worked as a waitress and cloakroom maid and studied cosmetology while writing songs and pursuing a music career at night.
Career
Mariah Carey was signed to Columbia Records in 1988. On her debut album, Mariah Carey (1990), she demonstrated her incredible vocal range. In 1991, Carey won the Grammy Awards for Best New Artist and Best Pop Singer. That same year, the title track of her follow-up album, Emotions, became her fifth consecutive single to top the charts. Subsequent hit albums included Music Box (1993) and Daydream (1995), each selling about 10 million copies in the United States, and the Christmas album Merry Christmas (1994). In 1997 she released the album Butterfly. It was heavily influenced by hip hop and rap. The single “Heartbreaker” featuring Jay-Z topped the charts in 1999. In 2001, Carey signed an $80 million deal with Virgin Records, making her the highest-paid artist ever. She starred in Glitter (2001), but the film and accompanying album fared poorly. In 2002, Virgin terminated her contract. She signed to Island/Def Jam later that year, but her first album for the label, Charmbracelet (2002), was a disappointment. However, her follow-up album The Emancipation of Mimi (2005) was a success. Her later recordings include Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel (2009), a second Christmas album (2010) and Me. In addition to her career as a singer, Carey continued her career as an actress. After her performance in the drama Tennessee (2008), she was praised for her portrayal of a social worker in the critically acclaimed film Precious (2009). In 2013, she joined the television talent show American Idol as a judge for its 12th season, and two years later began a string of performances in Las Vegas.
Career highlights
Carey has received many awards throughout her career, including the World Music Award for best-selling female artist of the millennium, the 1991 Grammy for best new artist, and Billboard’s Special Achievement Award for female artist of the decade in the 1990s. Carey was ranked #1 in the 2003 countdown of the 22 Greatest Voices in Music by MTV and Blender. At the 2000 World Music Awards, Carey was named “Best Selling Female Pop Artist of the Millennium” and “Best Selling Female Artist of the ’90s.” In 2003 she received the Chopard Diamond Award, which honored over 100 million albums sold worldwide. tips for success
Even under ideal circumstances, it’s difficult to have enough confidence to take on an unfamiliar challenge. It’s almost impossible when you’re surrounded by destructive, negative influences. Mariah Carey, a lower-middle-class, mixed-race child, knows how daunting this can be. That’s why she advises: “Never give up. Never listen to anyone when they try to discourage you. If you want to be successful, surround yourself with positive winners and avoid bitter losers.”
