Michael Jackson is still considered by many to be the “King of Pop” and the most successful entertainer of all time. He was an American singer, dancer, songwriter, and music and film producer. He celebrated his greatest successes in the 80s and 90s.
Michael Jackson was born on August 29, 1958 as the eighth of ten children of his parents Joseph and Katherine Jackson in Gary (Indiana). The boy’s musical talent was evident from an early age. His father pushed him and his siblings to perform at their best at an early age and tried to raise their profile through numerous appearances at talent shows. In 1966 he founded the band “The Jackson Five”, which consisted of his brothers Marlon, Tito, Jermaine and Jackie Jackson in addition to Michael Jackson as the main singer. Together with his brothers, he already managed to achieve worldwide chart success with “The Jackson Five”. Michael Jackson then started his solo career at the age of 13, but remained a member of the group.
In the fall of 1971 his first solo single “Got to Be There” was released, with which he climbed straight to number 4 in the American charts. Other similarly successful singles in the classic R&B style followed. Finally, Michael Jackson released his first solo album “Got to Be There” in 1972, which reached number 3 on the US charts. Number 1 positions in the charts and other solo albums followed, which, despite other successes, could not build on “Got to be There”.
His real breakthrough as a solo artist came in 1979 with the album “Off the Wall”, which has sold more than 20 million copies to date. In addition to the two number 1 hits “Don’t Stop til You Get Enough” and “Rock with You”, two other songs from the album were in the top 10 of the charts. For the first time disco-style songs by Michael Jackson appeared on the album.
In 1982, Michael Jackson finally achieved his breakthrough to become a world star with his solo album “Thriller”. It has sold over 100 million copies to date, making it the most successful album of all time. The performance of the song “Billie Jean”, which also appeared on the album, in which he popularized the “Moonwalk”, should finally give him legendary status.
Finally, five years later, the album “Bad” followed, with which Michael Jackson went on a solo tour for the first time. The “Bad Tour” was seen by around 4.4 million viewers. His second tour for the album of the same name “Dangerous” was also well attended, but had to be cut short because the megastar was becoming increasingly physically and mentally unstable.
In 1995, however, Michael Jackson came back with the “History World Tour” and was actually able to surpass the audience figures of the “Bad Tour”. Nevertheless, there were hardly any positive comments from his critics about this tour.
Despite the allegation of child abuse, of which Michael Jackson was acquitted of all charges in court in 2005, his musical success around the turn of the millennium was still outstanding. His last album “Invincible”, which is still the most expensively produced album in the world, reached number 1 in the charts in 25 countries.
Michael Jackson planned his farewell tour “This Is It” for 2009, for which a concert film of the same name was shot. This is the most successful concert film of all time. However, Michael Jackson passed away on June 25, 2009 from an overdose of an anesthetic. 18 days before his farewell tour was supposed to start.
More than 80 awards, the world’s most successful album “Thriller” and numerous other outstanding records speak clearly for the extraordinary career of the “King of Pop”, Michael Jackson. He is the most successful artist of all time in terms of record sales within a year and his music, his extraordinary stage shows and especially his dance style still influence numerous people in the world after his death.
“In a world full of hate, we should still hope. In a world full of anger, we should dare to offer comfort. In a world full of hopelessness, we should still dare to dream. In a world full of distrust, we should still dare to trust.” -Michael Jackson
