Short introduction
Brazilian Neymar da Silva Santos Junior, nicknamed Neymar, is a footballer who joined Paris St. Germain in a transfer from FC Barcelona since 2017 for the highest sum in history – 222 million euros. The striker is an absolute world star and also very successful in the national team of Brazil.
early life
Neymar was born near Sao Paulo in extremely modest circumstances, but not in a favela. His parents moved to Praia Grande quite early. Like so many children in Brazil, he had long since started playing football on the street and on the football field. However, he only got into a regular club at the age of eleven, when he joined the youth ranks of FC Santos, the club of the great Brazilian legend Pelé. It was also here that he made his professional debut after developing in the club’s youth departments from 2003 to 2008. From 2009 he played for the professionals at FC Santos.
By the age of 14 his skills had attracted so much attention that Real Madrid were interested in his services. At that time, however, FC Santos paid a large sum to stay at the club.
Career
He was used regularly from the beginning of his time with the pros – and even at that young age he was scoring regularly.
As early as 2011, for example, he scored 6 goals in 13 appearances in the Copa Libertadores, i.e. at the highest level. Accordingly, he was voted South America’s footballer of the year twice in a row, namely in 2011 and 2012. So it was almost a given that he would move to Europe at some point. The only question that remained was which club and under what conditions.
FC Barcelona finally won the race, signing him for the 2013/14 season and bringing in 57 million euros for the releasing club FC Santos. He also scored regularly for FC Barcelona as an immediate starter, although in Lionel Messi he played alongside someone who is responsible for many goals himself. After scoring 107 times in 177 league games at FC Santos, he did the same 68 times in 123 league games during his time at FC Barcelona, which ended in 2017. In both cases, of course, there are a number of goals in the cup and international competitions.
He had made his debut for the Brazilian national team long before moving to Europe. That was the case in the summer of 2010 and it was only until March 2011 before Neymar scored his first goal for his country there too.
He took part in both the 2012 Olympics (silver) and the 2016 Olympics with Brazil’s Olympic team. He scored the fastest goal in Olympic football history in 2016 when he scored after 14 seconds in the semifinals against Honduras.
His move from FC Barcelona to Paris St. Germain caused a stir in many ways. First of all, he did not part with his previous club FC Barcelona peacefully. Second, the transfer fee was the highest ever paid for a transfer in football. In the French league, Neymar once again shows his outstanding qualities and scores a number of goals. Despite major investments by the French, it has not been enough for Neymar to win the Champions League again.
Career highlights
There are three sporting highlights of Neymar’s career that can be named relatively precisely. First of all, winning the Copa Libertadores in 2011, the counterpart to the European Champions League. Then it was winning that one in Europe. He did this in the 2014/15 season with FC Barcelona.
With the national team of Brazil, or the Olympic selection, his greatest success was winning the gold medal in football at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, where he won the final against the German selection on penalties. Neymar scored both a goal in regular time and managed to convert the winning penalty in a shoot-out.
