Nicolas Cage is an American actor and film producer.
Nicolas Cage was born in Long Beach, California, under the name Nicholas Kim Coppola. His father, an Italian-American and a literature professor, and his mother, a dancer and choreographer, divorced when Cage was 12 years old. Nevertheless, he had a good relationship with both parents in the years that followed. Already in his childhood he was interested in acting. As a teenager he took acting lessons and wrote his own screenplays. Cage dropped out of high school at age 17 to pursue his dream of becoming an actor.
Cage made his screen debut in 1982 in the film I Think I’m Standing in the Woods alongside high-profile actors such as Sean Penn and Jennifer Jason Leigh. At that time he was still filming under his real name Coppola. Because of his famous uncle, Francis Ford Coppola, Cage changed his name in order to avoid any impression of being favored. He chose the name “Cage” because of his favorite musician, John Cage. Nicolas Cage also studied at the University of California Los Angeles School of Theater, Film and Television, where he also graduated. The American then played in various film productions such as “Cotton Club”, “Valley Girl” or “Arizona Junior”. Cage made his breakthrough with the film “Moonstruck” alongside singer Cher, which even won an Oscar. In the 2000s, too, he was able to build on his great successes of the 90s. Especially in the adventure and action film genre, Cage still proved to be a big crowd puller.
For the film drama “Leaving Las Vegas”, in which Cage played an alcoholic screenwriter, he won the Oscar for best actor. He was able to build on this success with four other glorious films: The films “The Rock”, “Con Air”, “Face Off – In the Body of the Enemy” and “Nur 60 Seconds” were very successful at the box office . Together they grossed about $600 million. In 2002, Cage received another Oscar nomination for the film drama “Adaptation – The Orchid Thief”. According to Forbes Magazine, Cage was one of the highest-earning actors in Hollywood. In 2007 and 2008 in particular, the actor was able to bring in high fees: Cage received around 38 million dollars per film during this time. In his career to date, the character actor has been able to convince both critics and audiences of his diverse talents: whether in mainstream or independent films, Nicolas Cage has mastered his roles with flying colors.
