Short introduction

John Michael Osbourne, better known as Ozzy Osbourne, is an English rock musician. He was the lead singer of the hard rock band Black Sabbath. He was also successful worldwide as a solo artist. Ozzy has been hailed as the “Godfather of Metal” and “Prince of Darkness” by the rock scene. Through the reality series “The Osbournes” his whole family became well known. His wife, Sharon Osbourne, managed him. Two of his five children, namely Kelly and Jack, also became famous through the show.

early life

John Michael Osbourne grew up in Birmingham, England, into a working class family with five siblings. The family lived in poor conditions in a two-room terraced house. He got the nickname Ozzy when he was in school. Ozzy had great difficulties at school due to his dyslexia.

As a teenager, he left school and tried various odd jobs to earn money for his family. The poor pay of these jobs even turned him into a criminal. He tried his hand at burglary but was caught and jailed for six weeks. There he tattooed his nickname on his fingers, which is one of his trademarks these days.

After his prison stay, he wanted to try his hand at being a musician. He bought a microphone and amplifier with borrowed money and ran an ad at local music stores. Then the first cast of the band Black Sabbath came together. From 1969 to 1979 the band performed with Ozzy as frontman. In 1979, the bandmates and their singer broke up due to drug and alcohol problems. These should have a significant influence on Ozzy Osbourne’s life and keep supporting him in deep holes.

Black Sabbath’s split, however, paved the way for a hugely successful solo career. Former Black Sabbath manager’s daughter Sharon Arden encouraged him to start his solo career and helped him launch and build his career from there. The two formed a band and their first album, Ozzy Osbourne, released in 1980, was a success.

Since the album had been very successful in England, Ozzy and Sharon also tried to gain a foothold in the USA. It succeeded with the album “Diary of a Madman” in 1981. This work is considered a classic of heavy metal music. Ozzy Osbourne had a strong influence on hard rock and the development of heavy metal in the 1980s with his appearance, style, singing and music.

His eccentric personality, which is shaped by the circumstances of his origin and his addictions and illnesses, made him one of the greatest artists on the rock scene and one of the most famous heavy metal musicians in the world. The fate of his career was largely steered by his wife Sharon Osbourne (née Arden), as Osbourne was often unable to manage his career and his Net Worth. In 1982, Ozzy Osbourne married his manager Sharon.

The crazy and degenerate stage shows, where Ozzy even accidentally bit off the head of a bat once (a fan had thrown a real bat on stage and Ozzy had mistook it for a rubber dummy), were widely celebrated in the scene.
However, repeated alcohol and drug excesses and the resulting bouts of weakness repeatedly disrupted the tour.

His third solo album “Bark at the Moon” and the subsequent world tour were nevertheless a great success. In 1986 “The Ultimate Sin” and Ozzy Tourte appeared with Metallica. Two years later “No Rest for the Wicked” followed. The band, whose constellation changed again and again, toured successfully with this album as well. The studio solo albums “No more Tears” and “Ozzmosis” followed in the nineties. In the 2000s “Down to Earth”, “Black Rain” and “Scream” appeared. But other live albums were released. Due to an accident with a quad on his own property, which ended almost fatally, the tours had to be interrupted in the mid-2000s.

Nevertheless, Ozzy Osbourne is considered one of the rock musicians with the most spectacular stage shows and is celebrated worldwide as the prince of darkness.

His more than 100 million albums sold should have provided a sufficient financial cushion. The tours and the reality TV series “The Osbournes” also brought in a lot of money for the family and made them world stars, even outside of the rock scene.

Ozzy Osbourne has been the lead singer of Black Sabbath again since 2012 and has successfully toured with the band and produced other band albums.
