Peter Gert Johannes Kloeppel was born on October 14, 1958 in Frankfurt am Main, the son of Edmund Kloeppel, a qualified engineer, and his wife Gerda. He attended the Humboldt Gymnasium in Bad Homburg and obtained his Abitur there in 1977. After completing his military service in the Air Force, he began studying agricultural sciences in Göttingen. He graduated in 1983 with a diploma. But his inclinations lay more in writing and commenting. In order to pursue this vocation, he attended the Henri Nannen School of Journalism in Hamburg from 1983 to 1985. Peter Kloeppel was offered the chance to work in the Bonn studio of the private broadcaster RTL. He seized it and is still employed by this station today. After 2 years he became studio manager and in 1990 he applied for a foreign correspondence and went to the USA. At that time the Gulf War broke out and Peter Kloeppel reported daily on the current state of affairs. In Washington DC he meets the television presenter Carol Sagissor. The two married in 1993 and moved to Bonn Bad Godesberg. In 1996 they had a daughter who they named Geena. In 1992 he was appointed chief presenter of the evening show “RTL aktuell”. From now on, Peter Kloeppel is a daily guest in the living room of RTL viewers and his popularity is constantly increasing. He is considered one of the most knowledgeable presenters in the television world. In addition to political issues, social problems are also in his focus. Peter Kloeppel states that in Germany, which is economically strong, the poverty gap is widening. He tackles these sensitive issues and pursues them unwaveringly.
His career began in 1992 when he was appointed chief moderator for the “RTL aktuell” program. A year later he becomes the deputy editor-in-chief. Always well-informed politically, he has been moderating RTL programs on federal and state elections since 1994. He comments on many special programs and conducts interviews with celebrities. A milestone in his career is reporting on September 11, 2001. He interrupted the current program to transmit the horrific images of the terrorist attack on the Twin Towers in New York. The spectators were informed live about the ongoing events. Before Peter Kloeppel, no moderator from a German television station had made this possible for viewers. His moderation was factual and well balanced. He very sensitively sorted all the information and pictures from the events in New York. He received the Adolf Grimme Prize for this convincing and extremely informative reporting. In the same year he founded the RTL journalism school for TV and multimedia and was its director from the start. The career of this competent moderator continues, in 2004 he was offered the post of editor-in-chief. From now on he is jointly responsible for the program and has to deal with the ratings. But he also asserts himself in this function, because he is convinced of what he is doing. Peter Kloeppel also enjoys watching the RTL television program in his private life. He was repeatedly confirmed in this position until he resigned in 2014. He wanted to take more care of his family, some of whom live in the United States.
The outstanding work of this exceptional moderator has been recognized with many awards. In 1996 he was awarded the “Golden Lion” and in 1997 the Bavarian Television Prize for his moderation. He received the “Telestar” for the best moderation in the “Information” category. The jurors couldn’t ignore Peter Kloeppel, and in 2001 he received the “Hans-Klein Media Prize” for the best political reporting. His moderation of the terrorist attacks in New York in 2001 received particular attention. This incomparable achievement was awarded the “Golden Gong” by the magazine of the same name and the renowned “Adolf Grimme” prize. In 2008 he was awarded the “Bambi” by Hubert Burda Media. His great documentaries also attract attention. In 2009 he received the RIAS Prize for his contribution “America between fear and awakening”.
Peter Klöppel loves his work and can’t imagine not going to the studio anymore. This also explains his quote: “If I couldn’t identify with the RTL program, I wouldn’t have been there for almost 25 years”. He is a news presenter who sees himself as an important interface between events in politics and business and the viewers.
