early life
Pierce Brosnan was born on May 16, 1953 to Thomas Brosnan and May Smith in Drogheda, Ireland.
Brosnan, who is now known worldwide as an actor, producer and environmental activist, moved to the small Scottish town of Longniddry at the age of 12 after the separation of his parents and the death of his grandparents to his mother and her new husband William Carmichael.
After Pierce Brosnan left school at the age of 16, he worked as a painter and at the same time began an apprenticeship at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. From 1969 he trained as a fire eater and then went on tour with a circus for a few years. From 1973 Brosnan began studying at the Drama Center in London. To finance his studies, he worked part-time as an assistant stage manager at the Royal Theatre.
In 1977, Tennessee Williams spotted Brosnan’s acting talent and cast him in the UK premiere of his play Red Devil Battery Sign. Brosnan went on to appear in Filumina and Wait Until Dark.
Among other things, Brosnan took on a small extra role in the Agatha Christie film “Murder in the Mirror” by Guy Hamilton. In this film he appeared alongside superstar Elizabeth Taylor (around minute 70).
Career
After the first small successes as an actor in the USA, Brosnan went on in rapid succession.
In 1981 he got the male lead in the TV mini-series “The Manions” in the USA.
A year earlier, Cassandra Harris, Brosnan’s fiancee, played a small role in the James Bond film “James Bond 007 – For Your Eyes Only”. Over dinner, she introduced Brosnan to producer Albert R. Broccoli.
Brosnan’s international breakthrough came in 1982 with the crime series “Remington Steele”. The series ran very successfully for four years. When it was canceled in 1986, producer Albert R. Broccoli was looking for a replacement for Roger Moore as the James Bond hero.
Although Brosnan was the producer’s preferred candidate for the role from the start, he had to turn down the offer. Because Brosnan was still under contract with “Remington Steele” when filming of “Days of Death” began, he was not able to shoot for James Bond. Timothy Dalton was hired to replace Brosnan.
Brosnan was able to secure many important acting roles in the following years. He was involved in films like “The Fourth Protocol”, “The Deceiver” and “Mr. Johnson” very successfully. In 1992 and 1993 he starred in The Lawnmower Man and the comedy Mrs. Doubtfire” achieved commercial success in cinemas for the first time.
