Prince Charles attracted media attention, among other things, through his marriage to Diana Spencer, better known as Princess Diana. Prince Charles is the father of Prince William and Prince Harry.
Prince Charles was born in London on November 14, 1948 at Buckingham Palace, the eldest son of Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. After his mother Elizabeth ascended the British throne in 1952, Charles became heir apparent and Duke of Cornwall. From the outset, Charles’ upbringing was designed to prepare him for his future office as king. He attended traditional private schools, received private tuition at Buckingham Palace and studied at Trinity College, Cambridge University and the University of Wales. Prince Charles then completed military training, most of which took place in the Royal Navy.
In the early 1970s, Prince Charles began acting as the official representative of the British Crown. In this capacity, Charles attended meetings of the House of Lords and was also admitted to the Privy Council at the end of 1977. Since then, Prince Charles has regularly represented his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, and thus the British royal family, in public. He is also active as a patron of countless organizations.
The marriage to Diana Spencer, which ended in 1981 in the public eye, fell through and they finally divorced in 1996 after some scandals. From the marriage to Diana, the children Prince William (June 21, 1982) and Prince Harry (September 15, 1984) emerged. Diana died on August 31, 1997 after a tragic car accident in Paris.
On April 9, 2005, Prince Charles finally married his longtime lover and friend Camilla Parker Bowles.
Since January 27, 2007, Charles has been the longest-serving direct heir to the throne in the entire history of the British monarchy. It is also of particular note that Prince Charles is an Honorary Colonel of many different units of the armed forces of the United Kingdom and other countries belonging to the Commonwealth. A project that is also very close to Prince Charles’ heart is the Prince’s Trust, which Charles founded in 1976. This is primarily used for disadvantaged young people and young adults.
