Sarah Connor was actually born as Sarah Marianne Corina Lewe in Delmenhorst. She is considered one of the most successful pop and soul singers in the German-speaking world. The real breakthrough came in 2001, the first known single was titled Let’s get back to Bed – Boy! and their debut album “Green Eyed Soul” even went triple gold.
With many other singles she reached number 1 in the German single charts in the following years and with her albums in 2005, 2015 and 2019 she also had three number 1 albums in the German album charts.
She sold over seven million records and is therefore one of the most successful German singers of the last two decades.
Her father is from New Orleans and worked as a copywriter, her mother was a former model. Sarah was born in Delmenhorst in 1980 and is the eldest of five siblings. One of her sisters, namely Anna-Maria Ferchichi, gained some media notoriety through her marriage to well-known rapper “Bushido”.
She first came into contact with music at the age of six in a Hamburg gospel choir and grew up with soul music, so to speak, since her early childhood. She also took street dance, hip hop and jazz dance courses and was thus able to expand her skills as a dancer. She later attended the Max Planck High School in Delmenhorst and decided to focus on music. Her ambition was noticeable very early on, because she also took lessons at the local music school and thus received classical training in dance, theater and the piano.
In her youth from the age of 15, Sarah took part in the school musical Linie 1 and embodied the role of Sunny in this play. She dropped out of school at the end of the 12th grade and then did a media internship at the RTL television station, where she worked for television shows such as Big Brother and The Oliver Geissen Show.
Sarah had her first appearance on the big stage during the Michael Jackson History Tour in Bremen. At Jackson’s first performance, she sang with her sister Anna-Maria in the children’s choir to the songs “Heal the World” and the “Earth Song”. A little later she sent the first demo tape to Martin Scholz (a former member of the boy band Touché), the boy band also came from Delmenhorst. The two soon became a couple and she made her debut as Sarah Gray in the opening act of that boy band. In 1998 she recorded the song “Last Unicorn” with Marc van Linden, but after the demo CD was rejected, the song was released by Sony Music with Project In-Mood featuring Juliette and became a hit. In the years that followed, from 1999 to 2001, she produced a few more demo CDs in Hanover and released the single “This Christmas” on a small label. However, this single failed to enter or jump into the charts and was therefore not a commercial success.
All the big and well-known record companies rejected Sarah Connor at first, she separated from her manager and worked together with Carlo Vista from then on. Sarah’s first turning point in the music business came in autumn 2000, when she signed a contract with X-Cell (a Sony subsidiary). The founder of this label, George Glück, became aware of the singer after hearing a recording of “Leise rieselt der Schnee” and enjoying the singing. Soon after, Sarah dropped out of school and moved away from home, the stage name was changed from Sarah Gray to Sarah Connor to make it sound more international and memorable. She then worked with two producers for half a year on her debut.
The first single was released in 2001 and was a collaboration with musician TQ, the single made the top ten in four countries. More singles and even number one hits followed, well-known titles included “French Kissing” and “From Sarah with Love”. Many other single releases and albums followed in the years that followed and celebrated great success.
The list of awards Sarah Connor received for her works is long: World Music Award, Echo Pop (2002,2015,2016), Comet (2001,2005,2007,2009), Bravo Otto (2001-2008 except 2002), 1Live Krone, Golden Camera, Top of the Pops (2001), World Music Award, Bambi and many more!
After initial difficulties in making her breakthrough, Sarah hit the ground running in 2001 and was one of the most successful German singers from that year.
In May 2005, Sarah caused a stir when she began singing the German national anthem with a wrong line of lyrics at the opening ceremony of the Allianz Arena in Munich.
The album “Muttersprache” is still one of the best-selling music albums in Germany.
Sarah Connor was married to the singer Marc Terenzi from 2004-2010 and has two children with him. She has been in a relationship with the producer Florian Fischer since 2010.
