early life

Taylor Alison Swift was born on December 13, 1989 in Reading, Pennsylvania to Andrea (Finlay), a former marketing executive, and Scott Kingsley Swift, a financial advisor. She was named after James Taylor, an American singer and songwriter. Her mother believed that a gender-neutral name would help her succeed professionally. Taylor spent most of her childhood on a 11-acre Christmas tree farm in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. When she was nine, the family moved to Wyomissing, PA. Her first hobby was horseback riding, but at the age of nine she turned to musical theater, appearing in productions at the Berks Youth Theater Academy. She regularly traveled to New York City for singing and acting classes. However, after auditioning in New York for a few years and getting nothing, she became interested in country music. At the age of 11, after many tries, Taylor won a local talent contest and was given the opportunity to open for Charlie Daniels. At the age of 12 she learned to play the guitar and wrote her first song “Lucky You”.

Career

At age 14, Taylor Swift moved to Nashville after securing an artist development deal with RCA Records. She left RCA Records when she was 15 because the label wanted her to record other songwriters’ work and wait until she was 18 to release an album. At an event at The Bluebird Cafe in Nashville in 2005, Swift caught the attention of Scott Borchetta, a Dreamworks Records executive who was in the process of launching his own independent record label, Big Machine Records. Taylor was one of the first deals from the new label. She released her first single, “Tim McGraw,” in 2006, and the song became a top 10 hit on the country charts. He also appeared on her debut album in October of the same year, which sold more than 5 million copies. Other popular singles soon followed. Swift’s concerts sold out in minutes and she became the youngest artist to win the Grammy Award for Album of the Year for Fearless in 2010. After the massive success, Swift took a break from the spotlight. However, in August 2017, she resurfaced and announced the release of the studio album Reputation. On August 24, 2017, Swift debuted first single “Look What You Made Me Do.” The video was viewed more than 19 million times on YouTube within the first day.
