Short introduction
Tina Turner is a singer-actress. She sold over 180 million records in her career, making her one of the world’s most commercially successful singers. She began her ascent as part of the duo “Ike & Tina Turner” with her then-husband. From the late 1970s she began her impressive career as a solo artist.
early life
Born Anna Mae Bullock in Tennessee in 1939, she began singing in the community church choir at an early age. Her parents separated soon after her birth, so she grew up with her grandmother for a while. In 1955, however, she moved to live with her mother in St. Louis. In 1958 she had a son, a circumstance that did not prevent her from joining Ike Turner as a backing singer. He later became her husband. In 1960 they had their first minor hit in the US charts. From then on, the real career of the woman who had been given the stage name Tina Turner by Ike Turner began.
Career
Ike Turner’s band, now known as “Ike & Tina Turner”, completed a number of successful tours. Not only in the USA, but also in Europe. In addition to the artistic success, she also brought the two married from 1962 a large income.
For a while they even opened for the Rolling Stones on their tour. In particular, the hit single “River Deep, Mountain High” became a success in Europe and made them immensely popular. With the song “Nutbush City Limits”, an allusion to their birthplace, the two landed a chart success in Germany. The single reached number 2 on the charts. Tina Turner composed this song herself.
But despite all the successes in their musical work, the marriage between Ike and Tina Turner began to falter. Ultimately, constant – even tangible – arguments led to the separation in 1976, which ended with the divorce in 1978.
While Tina Turner relinquished all rights to the previous songs they recorded together, she retained the right to continue using the stage name by which she was known. Nevertheless, the beginning of her career as a solo artist initially stuttered. Her forays into disco music, a genre popular at the time, were not well received by audiences. When she returned to her earlier style in her shows, her career continued with greater success.
Her 1983 cover version of the song “Let’s Stay Together” by Al Green became a hit in many countries in Europe. Shortly thereafter, Tina Turner was granted the same in the USA.
In the mid-1980s she also worked for the first time – and then several times – as an actress, e.g. B. in a movie of the Mad Max series. The accompanying title song “We Don’t Need Another Hero” became a number 1 hit in Germany and was also a great success in other respects.
The whole thing was topped by their 1986 album “Break Every Rule”, which contained three really successful songs that were released as singles. The result was a huge crowd at their concerts. So she played a stadium concert in Rio de Janeiro in front of 180,000 spectators.
In the 1990s she sang the title song “Golden Eye” to a James Bond film and published an autobiography. In 1999 her last album was finally released, after which she more or less retired. But then she did some bigger tours in the 2000s. With the last concert in May 2009 she ended her stage career.
Before that, she had already permanently moved to Switzerland. From there she released a few more albums with spiritual and Christian songs. In 2018, a musical based on her life premiered, courtesy of Tina Turner.
Career highlights
The high point of her career were the two albums “Private Dancer” from 1984 and “Break Every Rule” from 1986, when she was at the zenith of her work. Her absolute top hit was the single “We Don’t Need Another Hero”, which was number 1 in the charts in Germany for 21 weeks alone.
In addition, there are several Grammys and in 1991 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
