Short introduction
Undertaker’s real name is Mark William Calaway. He is best known for his decades-long role as the wrestler named Undertaker in World Wrestling Entertainment Inc. (WWE). He is one of the most famous wrestlers of all time and has won WWE’s most important title seven times in his career.
early life
Mark Calaway was born on March 24, 1965 in Houston Texas as one of five sons. During his high school and college years, he intended to be a professional basketball player. He received a basketball scholarship and studied sports management. However, he broke off his studies and in 1984 he was hired as a wrestler by the promotion World Class Championship Wrestling. Between 1988 and 1990 he worked in a series of smaller wrestling promotions before finally joining what was then WWF (now WWE).
Career
His famous Undertaker gimmick was first introduced to the general public at Survivor Series 1990. He was soon joined by a sidekick in the form of alleged undertaker Paul Bearer. The Undertaker played the role of the taciturn and unstoppable wrestler while Paul Bearer acted as his mouthpiece and heated up the audience.
At Survivor Series 1991, Undertaker finally managed to win the WWF Championship from Hulk Hogan for the first time. From that point on he developed into one of the biggest darlings of the public. So far he has mostly played a dark antagonist, but his role has been reworked into a grim baby face. In this form, he fought various feuds in the ring with the biggest wrestlers in the WWF.
While Undertaker was mostly portrayed as a supernatural figure with special powers during his early years, he began to be portrayed in a more human way in the second half of the ’90s. Mark Calaway often took over the microphone himself. Beginning in 1997, he engaged in a long-running feud against newly introduced wrestler Kane, who was introduced as Undertaker’s brother. The Undertaker was regularly involved in spectacular fights in which he was locked in a coffin and “burned” among other things. However, he always managed to come back and win the decisive duels.
Over time, the Undertaker’s gimmick changed. Towards the end of the 90s, the character was given supernatural powers again as part of the Attitude era and he led the so-called Ministry of Darkness, his own dark following. Beginning in 2000, Calaway’s role was adapted into that of a patriotic biker, the American Badass.
In 2004, Calaway returned to the ring as Undertaker after an injury layoff. In the years that followed, he was involved in many prestigious fights and programs within WWE. In addition to his gimmick and his title victories, he caused a stir with the so-called “Streak”. He has won his match against a variety of opponents at 21 consecutive WrestleManias, WWE’s biggest annual show. This one off streak was eventually ended by Brock Lesnar on February 24, 2014 at WrestleMania XXX.
Throughout his career, Mark Calaway suffered a series of protracted injuries. In the last years of his career, the physical signs of use became increasingly noticeable. The Undertaker stopped making regular appearances. His few fights a year were considered a rare attraction. On April 2, 2017, he played his last match at WrestleMania 33. As of 2018, however, he was again seen in isolated fights and still is to this day.
