early life

Uwe was born as the third and last child of Erwin and Anny Seeler, his older brother is the footballer Dieter Seeler.

He came into contact with football at a very early age because he comes from a family of athletes. His father, who earned his living as a dock worker, was a well-known footballer in the Hanseatic city between the 1920s and 1940s. At the end of his father’s career (who ended up playing for HSV), he also registered his sons with HSV.

From 1946 his sons Uwe and Dieter also played for Hamburger SV.

Uwe Seeler attended elementary school in Hamburg-Eppendorf, after graduating from school he began an apprenticeship as a forwarding agent.

From 1946-1953 Uwe played in the youth team of HSV, he made his first appearance with the men in 1953 at the age of only 16. A year later he was able to play permanently for the men with a special authorization from the DFB. As a result, he was able to fight for a regular place very early on and collect a lot of match practice at a young age.

In the following games he scored his goals in almost every game and thus consolidated his reputation as the best center forward in Germany. His hit rate was so high that he scored 404 goals in 19 years at Hamburger SV and 476 appearances. This quality did not go unnoticed in the European football world for long, and in 1961 Seeler received a very lucrative offer from Inter Milan, the club offered around 1.2 million German marks as a transfer fee. But Uwe turned down the change and remained loyal to Hamburger SV, who tried to keep Seeler at all costs.

In the further course he was voted top scorer and also the footballer of the year in Germany. Also internationally, Seeler caused a sensation with Hamburger SV, because in 1968 they reached the final of the European Cup Winners’ Cup, but lost 0-2 to AC Milan. This was also Uwe Seeler’s last final, in May 1972, after a game with HSV against a world selection, Seeler resigned as an active footballer.

Career highlights

One of his highlights is definitely taking part in the final of the European Cup Winners’ Cup, but Uwe was also able to impress in the national team from 1954-1970. Here he scored 43 goals in 72 appearances and was also able to show his class as a center forward.

During this time he played with greats like Franz Beckenbauer and showed strong performances in the national team. With this team he also took part in the World Cup finals in England in 1966, because it was he who shot the national team to the finals with a 2-1 victory over Sweden.

The German national team made it to the final where they eventually met hosts England. This final is considered one of the most legendary World Cup finals in football history as it resembled a true football crime thriller. Germany lost the game 2:4 aet and became vice world champion.

Although the team at the time was considered one of the strongest in German football history, Seeler was unable to record a title after 16 years with the national team.

In the last international match in his 72nd appearance against Hungary in 1970, he was able to surpass Paul Janes’ previously unbeaten record.
