Professor Doctor Werner Mang is probably the most famous cosmetic surgeon in Germany. His clinic on Lake Constance is a place of pilgrimage for celebrities who let Mang beautify them in order to improve their career prospects.
Mang is considered one of the pioneers in this field, having performed the first cosmetic surgery in Germany in the 1980s. Irrespective of his undisputed competence, Mang knows how to market himself and put himself in the public eye. Even at the age of 70, he regularly appears in the media to advertise himself and his clinic.
Werner Mang was born in Ulm in 1949. His father was a forest warden. He grew up in Lindau on Lake Constance. There he attended the Bodensee Gymnasium Lindau.
After graduating from high school, he studied medicine at the Technical University of Munich. Already during his studies, Mang was particularly interested in aesthetic medicine. He was in contact with Brazilian plastic surgeon Ivo Pitanguy, who was a luminary in the field of plastic surgery.
In 1974, Mang graduated from Technical University. This was followed by training as a specialist in ear, nose and throat medicine.
After Mang completed his specialist training in 1980, he turned to aesthetic medicine. These first steps were also initially taken at the Technical University of Munich Clinic. In 1984 his work culminated in his habilitation.
In the years that followed, Mang made a name for himself as one of the first doctors in Germany to perform cosmetic surgery on patients. In addition to his professional competence, his engaging nature, which he consistently used for self-marketing, helped him with patient acquisition. In addition, he published books on aesthetic medicine and sold cosmetic products.
His high profile soon attracted prominent patients to Mang’s consulting room. How many celebrities he has operated on in the course of his career is of course subject to medical confidentiality. Because of the negative career impact that disclosure of a celebrity’s cosmetic surgery can have, the surgeries always take place in the utmost secrecy. Nevertheless, Mang always manages to become the subject of media coverage. He regularly gives interviews or appears on talk shows.
In 1987 Mang founded the German Society for Aesthetic Medicine, of which he was president for twelve years.
Since 1990, Mang has been the medical director of the Bodenseeklinik, which was initially just a small private clinic with six beds. The operations were performed in the district hospital in Lindau.
In addition, Mang is CEO of the “Mang Medical One Clinic Group” he founded, which operates numerous clinics throughout Germany.
The highlight of Mang’s career is the Bodenseeklinik, which can be seen as his life’s work. After becoming its director in 1990, within ten years he succeeded in making the Bodenseeklinik the best-known clinic for aesthetic medicine in Germany.
The success finally culminated in the new building of the clinic, which finally opened in 2003 as a specialist clinic for plastic and aesthetic surgery. It has fifty beds, two operating theatres, a lecture hall and its own research laboratory. Up to three thousand operations are performed there every year.
“Through my job I have attained a wealth that I never dreamed of. I have achieved everything. My children are also brought up properly and have a good job – my daughter has a doctorate in communication science, my son is a qualified architect in Munich. I don’t even think about the money anymore. Money doesn’t buy happiness either.”
“I don’t think old age is beautiful. But I try to counteract it. The most important thing is: get out of bed in the morning! I get up every day at half past 6 and do sports. Activity keeps you young, brooding makes you old.”
“There is clearly a trend back to the roots – back to naturalness. […]. It’s different with my Russian patients, they still want mega, mega. But in Europe the trend is clearly towards organic. I’m starting to say green cosmetic surgery to that.”
Mang campaigned in a special way for the victims of the Ramstein disaster, who often suffered serious burn injuries. He performed many of these surgeries free of charge
Mang granted one of his patients’ unusual wish to have him have Brad Pitt’s face in cosmetic surgery. According to Mang, the patient looked even better than the original afterwards
Although Mang is now 70 years old, he still performs surgeries himself. When asked when he intends to stop, he finally replied that he would have to be carried out of the operating room
