Short introduction
Born in Newark near New York, Whitney Houston is one of the most successful singers of all time, measured by the number of records sold. In addition, she expanded her already immense popularity through her acting in several equally successful feature films. In 2012, Whitney Houston, struggling with drug problems, died in a hotel bathtub.
early life
The successful and also extremely popular singer was practically born into the music world. Her mother was a singer in the Sweet Inspirations, Elvis Presly’s backing group, and also sang backing for Jimi Hendrix. She has several half-siblings, and some of her cousins are also well-known singers.
So it is not surprising that Whitney Houston was already involved in a first recording at the age of 14. This was a solo part for the Michael Zager Band. Further recordings followed in 1979.
Even as a teenager, she already gained a lot of stage experience. She became part of her mother’s nightclub program. Whitney Houston cites a key moment in her own career as a solo performance at her church in Newark and as part of her mother’s program at the Town Hall Theater in New York.
Career
In 1983 she signed her first record deal, in 1984 her first single “Hold Me” was released. IT lasted until 1985 before their first album was released: “Whitney Houston”. This hit like a bomb and sold 13 million copies in the USA alone. It is considered one of the most successful debuts by a singer ever. With three songs from this first album, Whitney Houston also reached the top of the singles charts in the USA.
A big tour was followed by her second album “Whitney”. With this new masterpiece of pop music, she went straight to number 1 in the charts, which had never been achieved before by a singer. This time there were four singles from this album that reached No. 1 in the US charts.
This meant that seven of their singles in a row had all reached the top of the charts – a record! In 1988, her song “One Moment in Time” became the anthem for NBC’s Olympics broadcast, giving her renewed chart success in the US and UK.
In her third album from 1990 she went more in the direction of R&B. Sales figures weren’t quite as good as before, but their works still ended up high in the charts. In 1991, she sang the national anthem at the Super Bowl when the US was in the Gulf War.
Her first role as an actress followed. She starred in “Bodyguard” with Kevin Costner, also contributing six songs to the soundtrack. Her single “I Will Always Love You” was another huge hit, one of the biggest hits of Whitney Houston’s not-so-hit career.
Further engagements as an actress and further albums followed. While the fourth of them “My Love Is Your Love” had almost the same success as before, their fifth album “Just Whitney…” flopped in 2002 – at least by their standards.
In 2009 she gave a well-received interview with Oprah Winfrey, in which she talked about her drug addiction, which she believed to have overcome at the time. On a subsequent tour, critics were appalled at the condition of her voice, which failed several times.
On February 11, 2012, Whitney Houston was found dead in her hotel room’s bathtub. The cause of death was drowning, but years of drug use and heart failure are believed to have contributed. Guests at her funeral service included Stevie Wonder and Kevin Costner. She was buried in Westfield next to her father’s grave.
As it turned out later, she had spent a large part of her Net Worth, which had meanwhile amounted to well over 100 million dollars. Her daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown inherited the remaining $20 million.
